Appeal for Humanitarian Assistance in Tehsil Behrain, Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Floods in Behrain – 2023

Tehsil Behrain, located in the Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan, is a region that is prone to disasters such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, and glaciers. In recent years, the area has been devastated by floods in 2010 and 2022. Specifically, Kalam Valley, Utror Valley, Mankyal Valley, Shahgram Valley, Tirat Valley, and Bashigram Valley, as well as pockets of Union Council Madyan, are frequently affected by heavy rains, snowfall, landslides, and floods.

On April 18, 2023, severe rainfall caused flooding in Daral Khwar, Bashigram Khwar, Shahgram Khwar, and the Swat River, resulting in most of Behrain Town, Daral Valley, UC Mankyal, UC Balakot, UC Kalam, and UC Utror being cut off or disconnected from the rest of the country. Communication networks have been severely damaged, and health problems are emerging. In the near future, there may be a food crisis in the entire Union Councils of Mankyal, Balakot, Behrain, Kalam, and Utror, with more than 50% of Union Council Behrain and half of Union Council Bashigram, as well as villages Ingar Abad, Badalai, Dabargay, Shorkat Bangash Kwanda, and Shahgram in Union Council Madyan, and Tirat Dara, Qandil, Tanga, Daman, Drub Shahgram, Shaheed Baba of Union Council Tirat, being affected.

The affected people are facing shortages of warm clothes, blankets, and other essentials due to the cold weather and rainy season. Moreover, lack of communication has made it difficult for them to access proper healthcare, and severe health issues may arise.

There is an urgent need for food packages, medicines, warm clothes, blankets, beds, shoes, and other essential items. The affected people are also unable to afford food items, new clothes, and shoes to celebrate Eid, which is just two days away.

QAFELA Team, consisting of a pool of volunteers including males and females, as well as paid staff, is already in the field conducting assessments and raising funds.

We at QAFELA appeal to philanthropists to generously donate to help save lives in this critical situation. We also urge organizations working in rescue, relief, recovery, and rehabilitation to come forward and assist in saving the lives of the affected people.

QAFELA Team is ready to offer their volunteer services to any organization that steps forward to serve humanity in this time of need.
